You said "EQUINE OSTEOPATHY"?

The human osteopathy, everyone knows (or almost). Medicine of ground, as well as homeopathy or acupuncture, it aims at restoring body's balnaces as a whole mechanical and physiological.
Too much often amalgamated with spinal manipulation or chiropractic, techniques limited to the spinal column, osteopathy aims at rétabir mobility everywhere where it is missing, to release the great arteriovenous and nervous ways of passage, to ensure the correct operation of our bodies and our musculo-tendineux system.
It acts in fact a total reharmonisation of which the goal is to help our organization to find its own ways of cure: to intervene and let nature act.
Without reconsidering the great neurophysiological principles, let us retain that many pathologies depend directly on the good mobility of our ostéo-articular structure of support:

the structure controls the function .

It is thus essential to take care of the good positioning and with the good mobility of the articulations between them, any mechanical blocking maintaining one diminishes reflex painful (and vice versa).
What does it thus occur in the event of malfonctionnement from the structure?
On the local level, in addition to the stiffness and the pain, ignition of fabrics will evolve to thickening, then the sclerosis, with repercussion on peripheral circulation, disturbing the local function with its pathological procession: fibroses, épanchements, tendinitises, osteoarthritides, remote pains, etc…
At the vertebral level, the problem becomes complicated: indeed, on each vertebral floor corresponds, by the intermediate of spinal moëlle and its nervous prolongations a zone of ordering of the external structure or internal organs.
Thus the suffering D’a given area of the spinal column will be able it to involve the production of harmful impulses for its peripheral correspondence (neuralgia sciatic nerve, crurale, inter-costale, cervico-brachiale … ) or visceral (liver insufficiency, kidneys, intestines …) then creating a visceral secondary lesion.
But L’opposite can also occur: an internal organ in suffering will send information towards the higher centers, via its stage corresponding of spinal moëlle ; The accumulation of these harmful impulses will secondarily produce a blocking of the interested vertebral zone.
It will be then necessary simultaneously to treat the musculo-skeletal structure and the visceral sphere.

And the horse in all that?

Soon three decades ago, a young veterinary surgeon with overflowing curiosity came to study human osteopathy with The Institut William Garner Sutherland Respecting the fundamental principles of A.T.Still, it was the first to adapt and apply to the horse the osteopathic techniques, with success that everyone knows!
Since then, the success of equine osteopathy has never been contradicted.
The owners and the trainers have elsewhere included/understood well and are increasingly petitioning, not only with a one curative aim but also from a point of view of prevention, of readjustment and maintenance.
True ART of observation and listens, our practice holds from now on a place impossible to circumvent within equips looking after, generally in close cooperation with the veterinary surgeon for the largest good of our friends to four feet.

IFOREC remains to date, in spite of a systematic plundering by old (and bad) student and different which will be recognized, the only training in equine osteopathy integrating in an analytical way the readjustment of the horse.

When to call the osteopath?

The indications are numerous, but there remains preferable to work of coordination with the veterinary surgeon; its preliminary examination allows D indeed to eliminate any pathology which would not be our spring. The formation suggested by IFOREC authorizes already a serious approach in this direction.
Here thus some situations and conditions which can indicate to the owner that state of its horse requires an osteopath intervention, this list is not obviously exhaustive.

  • Wounds after slips, falls or intensive drive.
  • Distorsions (ball +).
  • Boîteries.
  • Refusal with the obstacle.
  • Bad engagement of two posterior.
  • Defect of relaxation of the posterior ones.
  • Protraction of former defective.
  • Refusal of the bit.
  • Foot which trails.
  • Shortening of the tread.
  • Difficulties on certain circles.
  • Impossibility of changing foot au.galop.
  • Refusal of certain paces (the horse divides au.galop, passes from trot to galop … )
  • Defense at the time of the seller (tries to bite or of ruer).
  • Abnormal positioning of the encolure and/or the head.
  • Displacement on two tracks: the horse crosses itself.
  • Muscular atrophy (shoulder, croup, back).
  • Problems of jawbones, even after dental care.
  • Deviation of the tail.
  • Neuralgia sciatic nerve.
  • Unusual sensitivity to the touch, the passage of the brush.
  • Abnormal behavior.
  • Unexplained fall of the sporting performances.
  • Noninfectious clogging of the members.
  • Some disturb functional in relation to a vertebral blocking:
    • chronic diarrhoea, colics of damning up,
    • disorders ovariens or testiculaires,
    • renal insufficiency,
    • respiratory embarrassment after effort, etc …

The treatment osteopathic will initially aim at avoiding urgently, namely to eliminate the painful factor: it is then necessary to consider the last relation lesion-pain,
even if it acts only one adaptive lesion .
The basic treatment will come then, in an interval from 2 to 3 weeks, follow-up so necessary a personalized réadaptatif plan.

In connection with canine osteopathy

It is quite naturally that osteopathy, universal medicine, are directed towards the animals, and in particular, certain terrestrial mammals:
equides (horses, mules, asses), bovines and sheep, canides (dogs), carnivores (cats)…

We leave well readily the elephants with more expert hands!

Of course, the dog has a very particular place in this nonexhaustive list; faithful companion of the man, this last is not always his best friend; just like the horses, the dogs develop the many pathologies primarily caused by men because of a use against nature or badly adapted.

Subjected to certain problems, even if it can nothing say to us, the dog however has its manner with him of expressing its suffering: unusual behavior, moanings, boitery, licking of a painful articulation, loss of appetite, refusal of obedience, etc … as many signs which will have to attract the attention of the Master.

There remains preferable, in first intention, to consult the Veterinary surgeon, but he does not remain about it less than the role of Osteopath will be determining in all pathologies of mechanical origin (problems vertebral, articular, muscular, tendineux … ) without forgetting that a vertebral lesion can involve in the time of the consequences on all the levels, including in the visceral sphere, as we saw before.
After a complete biomechanical assessment, the treatment osteopathic will be undertaken with precision by the means of soft manipulatives techniques and not traumatisantes, with the instar of those which we use in the children.
The preventive, bi-annual treatment in the old dogs, or annual in the dogs of sport finds here a place of choice owners have elsewhere for a long time included/understood!

The causes of the lesions are numerous:

To quote only someones :

  • Brutal or inadequate use of the collar.
  • Incorrect raising or drive.
  • Excess of weight, overfeeding.
  • Dangerous exercises and plays.
  • Bad physical condition.
  • Physical and/or psychological ill treatments.
  • etc…

It should be known that the possession of a dog engages its owner for a lease from 10 to 15 years with all the responsibilities and all the obligations and constraints that that supposes.
And especially, do not forget: comprehension, patience and tenderness. They will return it to you beyond your hopes.
